The rose cut of diamond dates back to 1500 and is one of the oldest diamond shapes. The number of triangular shaped facets can vary between 3 and 24 and are said to resemble the petals unfolding on a rose bud, hence the name. They are characteristically flat backed and domed so that they look larger than diamonds with the same carat but of a different cut. Also the term crown cut refers to the larger size of rose diamonds used.
